A happy new year to one and all from the Champagne Piggy.
Today I’m reviewing another of Aldi’s Champagnes for under a tenner. Aldi is so my favourite shop. Have you tried their Paneforte? It’s lush.Champagne Veuve Monsigny Brut No.3 Aldi Chadonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier £12.99 slashed to £9.99 over Christmas.
On the shelf it is pretty difficult to distinguish between the two Champagnes offered at £9.99 by Aldi, this Christmas. Their labels are samey, as is Aldi’s description: ‘hints of brioche’… blah blah.
In the glass however, Monsigny and Philizot and Fils are worlds apart. Monsigny is very, very dry – have a pot of sweet cherries for the rosé drinkers at hand – and it’s not quite as tasty as Philizot and Fils, but that doesn’t make it altogether bad. Oh no.
Monsigny is crisp, fresh and fruity, it fizzes as it should and finally, it doesn’t have ‘aldi’ splashed all over the label, or at all, which is handy for present giving.
Three cheers for the underdog…
