Happy new year!
I saw the new year in with this rather splendiferous, vintage bottle that was given to me for my birthday back in June. How I have held on to it until now, remains a mystery.Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin La Grande Dame Champagne, Brut 1998 Vintage £ (it was a present!)
In 1998 I was a 2nd year high-school student. I didn’t think school mattered and I wore a puffa jacket. I listened to the Verve’s Urban Hymns album and danced to The Spice Girls with my friends.
Meanwhile, the grapes for this bottle of brut were picked and squished. What a special bunch they were.
La Grande Dame proffers a crisp glass of prestige cuvée Champagne that is to be groaned over. It is rich in colour, like expensive gold. Its bubbles are tiny spherical shards that race to the surface and explode underneath your nose. It is at first citrusy and then toasty with a slight sweetness reminiscent of brioche. It is intense and full and entirely enjoyable. And I love the volutpuousness of the bottle… phwoar!
Quite unconventionally, I had it with american pancakes, smothered in butter and syrup, first thing in the morning. It went very well indeed and I enjoyed every last sip. More please!
